In Cyprus, there are festivals whose origin stretch back into antiquity; like the Limassol Carnival and Anthesteria organized in honour of God Dionysos. At Kouklia, where the temple of Aphrodite once stood, a church was known until a few years ago as "The Church of the Virgin Mary Aphroditissa". CIFF is a non-profit organization, that operates exclusively for the promotion of culture, a microcosm of how the world would have been like had people been able to contact each other directly and speak the same language of culture. A Picture in a Film is an international language in itself. The CIFF – “CÕPRUS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL” aims to screen the most interesting films of the rising stars, pay tribute togreat filmmakers and offer programs dedicated to contemporary film Production both from Cyprus and around the world, promotingdialogue between people of different civilizations. The Cyprus International Film Festival - CIFF offers to new directors from all over the world the opportunity to present their work in front of aVIP jury committee from the international film industry and sector. Another important activity is the series of educational programs which aspire to create the new generation of film viewers and familiarize the young audiences with the techniques and art of filmmaking. Apart from the main festival, other important activities are added to CIFF permanent calendar: cultural events as theatre, music, dance, exhibition, sport, conferences - related to the educational program previously mentioned. In its endeavor, the Festival establishes a close collaboration with various local and international cultural institutions, with cultural, educational and social organizations, as well as with embassies andforeign cultural and film centers worldwide. A small number of important international sales companies and selected buyers from Eastern Europe, Middle East, Greece and all the Mediterranean countries, are invited to attend the BUYERS AND SELLERS section of CIFF. The objective is for CIFF to become identified as a festival where economic transactions also occur. This would be similar to the major international Film Festivals, in which both a festival and a market occur simultaneously.
